San Geremia holds the body of Santa Lucia who was martyred in Syracuse AD 304. Her body was stolen by Venetian merchants from Constantinople in 1204 and moved to San Geremia after the Palladian church of Santa Lucia was demolished to make way for the train station.

Most squares have a well in the center (now sealed). The well contains rainwater that seeps down through the floor in the square. Since Venice is at sea level without access to streams, this provided them fresh water.
